2010 Underground FLX 135 x 41 Review

2010 Underground FLX 135 x 41

Product info - Accomplised freestyle / freeride charger looking for outstanding performance and value for money.
Still the benchmark in supreme edge-control, this iconic and continually refined shape enjoys state-of-the-art flex-tuned lamination technology. Smooth 3D design has created even thinner bat-wing tips that offer outstanding control in overpowered conditions.
Virtually indestructible, theres alot of fully lit sessions packed into every FLX and your excitement will grow as the whitecaps increase!
Hidden under your choice of subliminated graphics (8 bit or ocean legends) is a powerfull wood core, reindforced with carbon and finished with Biax glass laminate. Virtually weightless in the air, you're free to ride the way nature intended and to reach for your dreams with this impressive and versatile flex-bomb.

Out of the box - Underground have always been renound for making outstanding boards, this years FLX is no exception. Straight away the first thing we noticed was the weight, its light! much lighter than most kiteboards on the market it features a paulownia wood core, triple spine / quad concave chanels on the base, some funky tips to eliminate face spray and provide a better water release, the rail and tips are thin. The graphics are really tidy this year too, much better than previous years, the finish is exceptional you can see the build quality is top notch, it comes with G10 fins, some decent looking pads and stainless steel inserts with 3 stance width options.

On the water - At the start of the session the wind was light, the first thing i noticed was it was up and planing quickly even in light wind, as the session went on the wind picked up and this board adapted well it kept me planing through the lulls and coped well when the wind fired through, (i think this board could comfortably hold down alot of power,) you get a solid locked in feel when edging and it flies upwind. This board rides VERY smoothly definately one of the smoothest boards i have ridden, its very good in choppy conditions thanks to the channels on the base and the flex in the tips, the batwing shape in the tips eliminate face spray and drag through the water.
I dont know how they do it but once again the flex pattern is just right, theres a good amount flex in the tips for chop and landings and a lively snappy middle, its not a hardcore freestyle machine but produces good pop and the channels on the bottom really soak up the landings too.
The footpads and straps are great quality, very comfy and have lots of adjustment.

Summary - The Hydr8 Boardsports team like this board alot, Underground have clearly put alot of work into their boards over the years and have refined the FLX to a very high standard for 2010.
The FLX will suit most riders looking for an allround freestyle/ freeride board that excels in all conditions and will suit pretty much all levels looking to progress.
It doesnt produce as much pop as a freestyle specific board but the smooth ride and superb allround capabilites outweigh this. This board will take everything you throw at it and with the outstanding build quality you know it will last.
