Technology and Tradition
Together on the Water
Eighteen years ago Dave Chun began building paddles on his parent’s lanai in Kailua, Hawaii. Driven by the need for performance equipment and the desire to “build the best paddles in the world,” Dave began blending Hawaiian craftsmanship with modern technology and produced beautiful handcrafted wooden paddles.
As the demand for lighter equipment arose, Dave responded by developing the Hybrid Canoe Paddle – a paddle that consists of a wood shaft and a wood core with a molded composite blade. Considered radical at their inception, Hybrids are now the standard paddle in Hawaiian outrigger racing.
Dave has always proven to be an innovating leader in the world of paddle design and whether it is building a traditional wood outrigger paddle by hand or creating a one of a kind prototype for the next exciting development, he has never lost sight of his roots.

Testimonials
"In a short time stand-up paddle surfing has become a popular sport. I shaped Laird Hamilton's first custom board about five years ago. I watched him go through paddles adapted from other paddle sports like they were made of toilet paper - nothing lasted very long under hard use. I asked Dave Chun for help, and with his know how a standard was established. Using KIALOA's expertise to adapt carbon fiber and aluminum shafts to their innovative carbon fiber blades, Dave created a state-of-the-art stand-up paddle. When you want the best, go with the pros. Kialoa makes it happen. Aloha,"

" KIALOA's carbon paddle is super light and has the best blade I've ever used for surfing. It allows for super fast paddling and is great in the bottom turns- leaning on the blade is really smooth."

"When you know Dave and Meg Chung personally, you know that any product they produce is quality and made from the heart because of who they are. I paddle Kialoa exclusively because they are quality paddles that I know are made with quality materials and professionalism. They are also beautiful. Mel Pu'u - Mel says of the Shaka Pu'u,
"The comfortable oval shaft allows for a light, relaxed grip and the blade is adjustable - when you want the extra power you've got it - and when you want to up the RPMs, you can adjust by burying less of the blade. It gives you the ability to spin and move quickly in critical situations."

"One of the reasons why I like Kialoa paddles is that I trust them not to break. I've paddled for years and never seen a Kialoa paddle break! The "wacky" shaft helps me to keep the blade at the proper angle and relieves stress on my wrist. Dave and Meg have supported numerous paddlers, from young future hopefuls to Molokai champions."

"I'm a woman and an artist, not a gear freak. My Kialoa paddle is that rare piece of gear that I love; its beautiful, lightweight, feels great in my hands and it's made by an artist! Thanks Dave Chun!"
